It's like the default for double clicking on a folder is like right clicking and selecting "open in new window". Thursday, August 13, PM. I don't think so, it's a fresh install done 2 days ago, AVG was one of the first things I installed, it's all been behind a hardware firewall. I have install Visual Studio and plus a few other apps that weren't downloaded from Internet. I've also noted that even if I log in to the machine as a different user, folders still open up in their own window.

I was thinking that Windows 7 would be the operating system MS would get right I don't even know why a person would ever want folders to open in a new window when you double click on them. Rather than hacking the registry, I would use the Folder Options dialog to toggle the single-click and double-click to open option back and forth, with apply and restarting Windows in between.

If it's a corrupt registry setting, that should do it. My system, set to single click, does not display your behavior. Rating posts helps other users. Damn, no joy with that either! I set to open in own window, rebooted, set to open in same window, rebooted.

STILL opens in new window :- I also then tried setting to single click to open, rebooted, but still opens in new window! I'm wondering if there's some option to "edit" what program is run when you double click on folders, much like you can edit file types to change what program is used when a file is opened or edited?

I suspect you have some corrupt system files. Hi Mark, thanks for you help, I ran the commands and the resulting log is below. It didn't fix the problem and I also tried changing to open in new window, reboot, open in same window, reboot to no avail. Well, I would've hoped that downloading Windows 7 RTM from MSDN would be the best source for the Install, but you're right, perhaps people have hacked Windows 7 to make it work better and searching torrent sites for it is the best option.

Friday, August 14, AM. Hi, There is a known solution for Windows Vista. I am not sure if it works in Windows 7. Could you please test it? Run following command: regsvr32 actxprxy. Click OK in the popup window. Reboot the computer to test the issue. Does it work? Hope it helps. Saturday, August 15, AM. Hi, I ended up getting so frustrated that I wiped the hard drive and re-installed windows.

I used system restore to go back to a time when double clicking on a folder didn't open in a new window and started re-installing software again. Something with that package and Windows 7 don't mix.

Monday, August 17, PM. Mate, you're a star! Worked perfectly. I started a forum on SourceGear as well, I'll add your post to it! Great to see a fellow Kiwi judging from your sign-in name was the one to solve my problem! Tony, Yep another Kiwi. I'm in Auckland, NZ. Glad to help. The 3 issues I had were bugging me for about a week so I was rapt to find the solution to all 3 was the same registry entry.

Tuesday, August 18, PM. Hi guys. Kevin's workmate here :P The core issue here can create a multitude of problems on your system. Those registry changes will fix several of the problems but the overall solution would be to simply re-register the actxproxy.

Wednesday, August 19, AM. Kevin, you are a God-send from Godzone. Yep, I'm a kiwi too. I received the symptoms of this problem when I uninstalled Sourcegear Vault client tools after finished a job at a client and didn't need them anymore. I had installed the tools when my PC was running Vista then upgraded to Windows 7. After uninstalling Vault I got the explorer window issue and the IE8 never-connecting tab issue. Your registry fix saved my bacon.
